oil paintings:techniques Eleanor uses many of the old Renaissance techniques in her paintings and has adapted them to the eye of modern times. These involve the hand grinding of pigments to make paints, much as artists such as Vermeer (or his assistant) would have done. Rather as a hand-woven garment has the added richness of slight irregularities, so hand-ground paints refract the light slightly unevenly giving added quality and intensity. Each painting is worked on over a long period starting with a monochrome under painting, glazes are then added and the colours are gradually built up. A painting may consist of 7 or 8 glazes, as well as much scraping back, and can take several months to complete. |
