monoprints:techniques These are a form of work often used by the old masters. They provide a simple way of expressing an idea, and as such often embody a unique sense of spontaneity. The process consists of painting onto a steel plate with oil paint. The 'print' is then taken by laying the paper over the plate and using a toller, or press to exert pressure. The resultant 'blot' can be exploited to produce fine textures as well as solid colour. The process is an exciting one for it comes perilously close to a series of controlled accidents. Many prints are made and most are discarded. Degas was a master of this technique and his little known landscapes reveal a love and confidence of great sensitivity. This present range of monoprints have pastel added to them. This further develops the colour, enhances texture, and generally unifies the piece.
